The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war that we know about peace, more about killing that we know about living. ~Omar Bradley

Narrative Story

I’ve always been afraid of heights. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been afraid to travel by plane, ascend to the top of a roller-coaster, or look down from a skyscraper, and I think it has a lot to do with a reoccurring dream I’ve had from when I was younger.
I had this dream where I was walking up a tall, winding staircase, one that never seemed to stop. Dreams are supposedly seconds long, but when I dream this particular dream, it seems to go on for hours. As I’m walking up the stairs, I start to notice that the railing fades, which catches me off balance and causes me to think I’m about to fall into the winding hole below me. After catching my balance, I continue to walk up the stairs in a fragile manner thinking that I'm going to trip and fall off the staircase. The stairs become more ancient and creaky as I get closer to the top. Even though I know that I shouldn't look down, I do and I tend to wake up during this part. When I go back to sleep, the dream continues and I start to see the light that will lead me to the top of the stairs. The last step seems ten feet high as i try to push myself over it. Once I'm on the top I feel a sigh of relief, but it instantly vanishes when I see this old woman coming towards me. She starts to push me closer and closer to the edge of the stairs. Though I've had this dream a million times, I can never make out what she's saying to me, only that she is yelling. Finally, she pushes me so hard that I fall down the black winding hole. The interesting part is, I never reach the bottom and I always wake up.
This dream, or rather nightmare, has always left me in shock and wonder of why it is one of my reoccuring dreams.
